Vitamin C Deficiency Impairs Early Brain Development

New research indicates that a Vitamin C deficiency may impair the mental development of newborn babies. The study reveals pregnant mothers with a deficiency may be putting their child at risk because it may inhibit neuronal connections and slow overall brain development, which may affect the child later in life.

Vitamin D Deficiency

Vitamin D deficiency has been increasingly recognized throughout the United States as a problem that may affect numerous patient populations. Even more concerning to health practitioners has been the growing prevalence of this condition in otherwise healthy children. Vitamin D deficiency is surprisingly common in adults, especially beyond age 50. It is also slightly more common in inner city areas, because environmental factors, such as smog, can block the necessary ultraviolet (UV) component of sunlight. Children with darker pigmented skin are more likely to be vitamin D deficient than light skinned children.

Night blindness

Night blindness, Nyctalopia, is the inability of the eyes to quickly adjust to changes in light intensity. For example, people whose eyes cannot quickly adjust to the darkness of a movie theater, or who are temporarily blinded by the glare of headlights at night, probably have night blindness.
